Parachi

Parachi (ISO 639-3 [prc]) is spoken by around 3,200 people in northeast Afghanistan. Parachi speakers live mainly in Kapisa province on the southern slopes of the Hindu Kush mountain range, north east of Kabul. They occupy villages in the Shotol valley near the city of Golbahar, and in the Ghuchulan and Pachaghan

valleys in the Nejrab region. Each of these valleys have their own dialect.

There is a very high rate of bilingualism among Parachi speakers with Dari. Some in the southernmost parts, in the Pachaghan valley, also speak Pashto. Parachi is classified as being in the northwestern group of Iranian languages. It is

related to the Ormuri language, spoken in Logar province and over the border in Pakistan. Parachi is used mainly among extended family groups in personal communication. There is no writing system and no literacy materials available for education in Parachi.
